The rocks of Val Comelico are among the oldest in the entire Alpine chain: 500 million years of history visible along the paths. It all begins at the bottom of the sea, with a volcanic explosion whose sediments have been transformed over time into sandstone and metamorphic rocks. Then, 300 million years ago, the collision between two continents created the Erinica chain, folding and recrystallizing those rocks into lamellar shapes that are still recognizable today.
Today, the eight geological itineraries of the valley cross these formations and make them legible even to those who are not specialists: colors, shapes and stratifications tell of different eras, often within walking distance of each other. Explanatory panels accompany the route.
